  1. Sorry for the late reply. The fire ring elevates the grill. You could cook without it, but you’d have to elevate the grill in some way (stainless steel bolts, maybe?). It could be done, but it works better with the ring. The original ring is 2” too tall with the new firebox. The 3” fire ring for the original Kamado Joe Classic is out there, you just have to look for it.   3. You’re correct, I saw that while researching parts for my recent overhaul. There was a third party cast iron version of the BGE platesetter on Amazon that should work fine.
  4. The only thing that I know of that fits your description is the BGE diffuser. The one for the large BGE works fine, I used it for years until I dropped it and broke it.
  5. That’s a good idea. I quit with the pan years ago due to the hassle of clean up.
  6. I have used this grill for 11 years. The firebox collapsed, so I either had to repair it or buy a new grill. I decided on the former, because I could overhaul it much cheaper. Getting an exact replacement for this is not possible. It’s no longer made. The Large BGE firebox would probably work, but I went another direction.... It is about 6” tall, that is 2” too tall. So I bought the Kamado Joe Classic fire ring, it. Fixes the problem. About $65 delivered. I could have stopped there, but I continued.... Cheap upgrades... It gets hotter, starts quicker, is more consistent in temps. This all due to improved airflow, mostly due to the new bottom grate and the ash basket. It is easier to clean as well.
  7. I have had this grill for 11 years. I think I can answer ANY questions anyone has about it. The BGE large plate setter works, I used it for years. I would recommend the divided heat diffuser of the classic Kamado Joe as a better solution. It works perfectly in the bottom grate, and can block 1/2 of the grill for both searing and indirect, or the entire top surface.
