  1. Thanks CenTex. 500-600 was pretty warm on the KJ. It took about 45- hour to get there. I'm up the road from you outside Fort Worth. Now days, you can lay a steak on the sidewalk for a sear.
  2. Thank you for the ideas. I really enjoy the Joe, and am surprised how easy and convenient it is.
  3. Thank you GG. Thats the information I was looking for. I took my KJ to 600 yesterday, and it took a while to get there. I was cooking a steak and wanted a sear. It just seamed to take a long time to hit 600.
  4. Anyone have a rough guide? What I am looking for is to know how long (roughly) it takes the KJ1 to reach say 750 F? I know that there are a lot of variables with temperature, but I was just looking for ideas on when to fire it up before dinner so the wife isn't waiting on the KJ. I know it would be rough guess, but just a guide. Thanks, Larry
  5. My only bag to date is KJ. It stunk like the inside of a harbor freight tools store. And it didn't go away. Tomorrow I plan on some B&B Oak. I will take the KJ back to the big box store for credit.
  6. Thank you, maybe I didn't let the charcoal get hot enough. I never had anything but a white smoke and then clear. Problem is we had the stench for 2-3 hours while I played with temperature settings. Fortunately I didn't put anything on the grill. I'm going to try some B & B next time and see if I continue to have the issue. Its gotta be the charcoal.
  7. Okay, I finally got my classic put together and loaded a basket of charcoal and fired her up. I swear it smells like the inside of a Harbor Freight Tool. I am currently trying to talk my wife off the ledge. I gotta believe I got a bad, BAD, batch of charcoal. Please tell me that KJ charcoal does not normally smell like a HF. Is this a bad batch? Will this taint the inside of my KJ? Anyone else with this issue? Recourse? HELP!
  8. I joined the Kamado Joe family yesterday. KJ Classic 1. I am amazed at the amount of resources available with the Kamado and the versatility of it. I have grilled all my life and have a pellet, RecTeq Bull 700 I use to smoke with. I am currently reading and watching the YouTube videos learning as much as I can, and there is a lot to learn. I'm looking forward to this forum and what i can learn here. L2
