Update: 2 years after my last post, here's what went down. I finally received a redesigned hinge for the original Big Joe. It is very well built. Looks similar to the air-lift hinge on the new Joes, but doesn't have that degree of counter-balanced assist. I had a cracked firebox in multiple places (found during cleanout), submitted a claim, and was sent new AMP firebox. Sold my Big Joe. Bought a new Big Joe.

The hinge is beefy and impressive looking, however I'm one of the ones with issues. I too can have that sucker tight, and holding up with no problem. But I've had issues with it creeping up in the back when tightened. Holds up great = leaks in the back! I'm on the list for the update, and welcome it...Also, I love my Big Joe! Still waiting on redesigned hinge. I'm kinda in between sealing really good, and holding lid up really good. It's scaring me a bit on the retention. I'm always double checking it. Well, thanks to Bobby and John for the updates, and the preparation for a wait....lol. I'm looking forward to the new design, as a need and a want! And, I'm very thankful for the support of the KJ family of products...."just sayin"....!
