  1. Not necessarily related to the Kamado, but I see Walmart has marked down the Hamilton Beach 3.5-Quart Stand Mixer ($65 for Black, $66 for Red). As far as I can tell, it is not a 'cyber week' deal, but I could be wrong about that. I read some reviews and the consensus is, it's a good budget stand mixer, especially at those prices. Cons: Bowl is on the small side (3.5 quart). Not the best for a thick mix with 4+ cups flour (i.e. a thick bread or cookie dough). It has a 300 watt motor, which is just shy of the 325 watts on the Kitchen Aid Artisan, though the Artisan does come with a 5

  3. I was going to get a pizza stone, for a heat diffuser, but ended up buying the 14" Nordic Ware Deep-Dish pizza pan from Walmart (actual size is 15 x 15 x 1.63). I added some mesquite chunks and water to it while smoking a pork shoulder. It seemed to work pretty well for me. With a little care, I am able to lift it out and put it back in, as needed, during the smoking process. Here is a pic of the pizza pan (aluminum) sitting on top of the Webber #7441 charcoal grate.
  4. I purchased the Akorn Kamado from Lowe's this past weekend. After seasoning the grate, I smoked a pork shoulder (picnic cut) Saturday night, and pork spare ribs on Sunday. So far I am really impressed with it! I did some research on this forum, and I read several reviews before pulling the trigger, so I felt pretty comfortable making the purchase. I recently moved and I had to leave my nearly worn out Char-Griller and Webber grills with our neighbor, back in Austin. I'm very happy to have a grill again, and I think this will be perfect for the kind of grilling and slow smoking I like to d
