  1. I have a smokin stone for my AKORN Kamado, but wanted one for my AKORN Jr.. I found that not only are they scarce, but pricey too. From searches on the forums I did not really see a good solution, so I gave it a try myself to come up with one. Here is what I got: Wally World has Lodge 10.5 inch griddles for $14.88. Once out to the shop I cut the handle off. Just eye balled the cut off point to fit on the shelf in the cooker. Went to the grinding wheel to eliminate the rough surfaces and then drilled holes in the handle and handle lip to hold the bolt, nut and lock washer. Fit nicely in the cooker and was very stable. You can remove the deflector with BBQ gloves or use the grill handle which fits nicely in the slot of the griddle handle. Fired up the grill and seem to work just fine with some salmon fillets I did.
  2. I just bought a new PB K24 from Costco 2 days ago. I tought it would be easier to find a suitable heat deflector (... and affordable). The original one is about 136$can (with shipping). I was looking at all the other topics related to the heat deflector, and it seems that the original one is not really appreciated. The problem is, most of the replacement solutions are from items are from the US or UK, but I can't find these items in Canada. I was looking for for the Vision XL spider (or any other spider), or even for the Saffire multi levels, but there's none on amazon.ca, homedepot.ca, ... I can't find any other solution. The Ceramic Grill Store, that most people are talking about, says on his website that they can deliver to Canada (+ some fees), but when I try to order, the only country available is US. I would like to have some help, or some other ideas available in Canada, instead of ordering the expensive original Pit Boss Heat Deflector!!!
  3. So, I know many of you are looking for a good deflector solution for the Pit Boss. I believe I have the perfect solution, although it took a bit of work. You may be able to custom order one or get them to make a bunch for us if there is demand. What I got was the Ceramic Grill Store's Vision XL Spider. It sits in the notches in the firebox and puts a ring about 2 1/4" down below the main grate. You can then set a 16" stone or 2 half stones on the spider, and if you want, a 16" drip pan (also from CGS) on the stones. You could also set a 15-17" searing grate on it to get closer to the fire. The main grate sits on the firebox as normal with plenty of clearance from the drip pan below. Alternatively, you can flip the spider, and it will hold the main grid up near the felt line. What needs to be done to mod it? The Vision XL spider is 23" across and the PB internal is only 21.5, so you need to trim the 3 feet to get it down to about 20.5-21" or so. Also, the width of the legs is 18" which JUST fits in the PB fire bowl. I was worried about thermal expansion so I re-bent one of the legs to get it down to about 17 1/2" - 17 3/4" which leaves plenty of room. CGS may make one for you or start carrying it as a model if we give them these dimensions. Let me know if you need help with that. See pictures below and fire away any questions... Legs trimmed.   4. New to this forum and wanted to give a big THANKS to previous post on temp control problems with the Akorn brand Kamado. I lost the thread and could not reply but one individual decided to return his Akorn to Home Depot due to frustration. I had exact same problems and was glad to see that it was ignorance with the air flow and lack of patience. So a big thanks to all that posted. My Akorn's fire died this morning after putting on a butt and following the user guide that said to shut top vent completely. After reading the forum, re-starting and being patient, it is has been holding at ~300 for the past hour and a half and I am slowly letting it get down to around 225 (hopefully). Now to the questions. One cook book I have states to let grill stabilize to grilling temp, then place the ceramic heat diffuser into the unit, then place the grate on and then add the meat. My fear is that if I did this the Akorn brand ceramic heat diffuser would crack due to the temp shock. So first question: Is their recommendation to let the grill reach desired temp PRIOR to adding the diffuser BS? Second Question: If I do that will it crack the diffuser? Thanks! AkornJim
  5. This is a 15" carbon steel paella pan suspended by its handles from the top rim of the firebox ceramic. The bottom of the pan sits 2" below the main grill and there is a 1.5" air gap between the edge of the pan and the inside edge of the firebox ((18" - 15") / 2). The main grill sits fully on the rim of the pan just above the ceramic so it is stable and does not rock at all. A drip pan could be placed either on the main grill or in the paella pan on a heat barrier (e.g. ceramic tile, thin pizza stone, crumpled balls of aluminum foil, etc.).
  6. I am a new Series M owner. I am looking for input on what type of heat deflector I can use. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks
  7. My question is, Is there an optimum distance the heat deflector should be from the top of the fuel or from the bottom of the cooking great? I am a new Kamado owner and my grill did not come with a heat deflector. I have the 24" Pit Boss from Costco. Pit Boss sells a deflector but I would have to order it online and their version looks like it drops from the top of the firebox a few inches towards the coals. Other deflectors look like they sit on top of the firebox, which would make them closer to the grate. The style that I need has a 3 tab design. Vision makes one for the Kamado B series 18” If anyone has this deflector could you provide some dimensions for me? Width of the Tabs, diameter from center of tab to the opposite side of the plate? Thanks Gurus!
  8. I stopped by my local Kamado Joe dealer and he has Heat Deflector and the triangle that holds it for around $30 bucks. I think its the old style that you had to purchase in addition when you bought a Joe. Now, the new Joes have the Divide and Conquer system.The Deflector is 15" and looks like it would make a great pizza stone and the stainless triangle seems like a good way to hold the lava rock deflector. I am sure it would fit on the vision firebox, but I haven't taken my tape measure to the store. Any suggestions? Seems like it is about 1/2 the price of a woo ring/spider/pizza stone setup that I see on the Ceramic Grill Store. Although it doesn't offer the expansion capabilities that that the Adjustable Rig has, and I don't know if it would work if I went to a D&C system sometime in the future.... hmmm....

After cooking with my Akorn for about a year (which I'm definately keeping) I bought a Joe today and I'm wicked excited to fire it up....It was a floor model at a store thats had it about a year so its the older style and didn't come with a heat deflector. I'm not sure where to buy one....maybe I need to buy the new divide and conquer set up? Any advice would be appreciated! Mogulhuck
  10. As the owner of a Vision Classic B, I've been envious of KJ owners with the split heat deflectors, and the ease of switching between direct/indirect cooking the design provides. So, I went and bought a 15.5" half round kiln shelf from Euclids. The shelf cost $12.65, & shipping was $21.40 for a total of $34.05. Fits well on the bracket that came with the 14" vision stone, and leaves about 1/2" of space around the outside perimeter. As you can see from the picture I haven't used it yet, but I'm looking forward to it, especially with rebeyes. Just thought I would share in case anyone else was looking for a similar solution.
