  1. So three things that are unsettling about the great Costco Big Joe Demo Deal I picked up today. One, I can't tell you until Monday. The other, well first the ride home was so nerve racking. You notice every single bump and the highways were in poor condition, with people driving like maniacs- despite it being Good Friday. Longest drive of my life – trying to get this home in one piece. Next, the BJ Demo has a broken or missing latch in the front so, I can't cook on it until I get the replacement. That's my latchless BJ on the right. I knew this going in but it makes the third thing really suck. I'm basically waiting to protect the innocent or naive.
  2. Hi folks, Bought a Kamado Joe Big Joe a couple of months ago and am loving it. I'm now wanting to get the Junior for those quick after-work dinners where all I'm cooking is a quick steak or a pork chop. I've all but decided that the size and type of cooker is the right thing for this but one thing I cannot work out is how people do reverse sears on the Jr without the divide and conquer system? When doing a big tomahawk steak I would normally set it on the indirect half of the big joe at 225F then crank the temp and sear it on the other side over the coals. Any tips on how people do this on a Jr would be great. Cheers!
  3. It has been a few weeks but some folks may remember a thread with me debating a Classic vs a Big Joe as a MBA graduation present for myself (upgrading from an Akorn). Well, I was having a hard time justifying the cost of a Big Joe right up until I was able to secure the Costco Roadshow Demo deal. I figure for what a Large BGE with accessories would cost I was able to get a bigger, better-equipped cooker, and a cool portable one to go with it (It is also makes it easier to justify when you're employer reimbursed your tuition and books 100% because you made all A's). Needless to say I'm pretty damn excited and looking forward to firing these babies up! Oh yeah, btw, for anybody that is considering a Big Joe but is unable to see one in person (as I was), they are huge as my 2 year old, Adeline, is illustrating!
  4. Found a great buy on a Primo XL and Primo Jr. on Craig's list. Each came with all the accessories and was lightly used. Purchase price was less than 30% of original price. So in addition to my Akorn, I guess I will join the Primo group as well!
  5. Does anybody know anywhere that still stocks the Akorn Jr? Wanting to get one for my father in law for a Christmas gift and figured I needed to start looking soon. I heard Menards dropped them and I dont really know anywhere else that carried them? Or if you were a lucky individual that picked up a few extra when on sale and you want to part with one please PM me Thanks!
  6. I had previously made a temperature controller for my full size Akorn. http://www.kamadoguru.com/topic/3779-homemade-temp-controller/?hl=%2Brelay+%2Bcontroller Now that I sold the large Akorn and just use a JR., I decided to convert the controller for it. I reworked the flange so that it slides in the smaller grove of the JR. The original sliding door fits in the groove and holds the flange in place. I will see how it works on my next long, slow cook. Last Sunday I started a pork butt at 1 am on R2D2. I got a lot less sleep than when I used the temperature control unit on my large Akorn for overnight cooks. Hopefully this will work better.
