  1. Was drinking a beer, racking my brain about what I could use as a spacer under my drip pan to keep liquids from scorching on the deflector. Then drank 2 more and came up with this. Sorry if this simplest hack ever has been posted before!
  2. I used gas for years then found pellet smokers. I've been smoking with pellets for 6 years and love it. My daughter grew up, moved to Ohio and got married. Now she misses my smoked food. Since pellet smokers cost so much to run I knew that that wouldn't be a good choice for them. I did my research and found the Acorn at Lowes. After I had all the options pros and cons I got with my new son and said I'll splurge for a smoker for you'll in this range. I told him pros and cons of gas(with smoke box), indirect charcoal, stick, electric, and the Acorn. He asked if he could have some time to decide. Although I wanted to get it then and try it out (I figured he'd decide on the Acorn or the electric Masterbuilt ) I knew I would do the same thing so I said take time to research and decide. Alas I had to fly home before he decided. As you can guess, as soon as I arrived home I got word he had done the research and has decided on the Acorn. Since they will be moving soon I told them lets wait till they actually move so the unit doesn't have to go through a move needlessly. I'm glad I found this site and will be telling him. If it weren't for the fact that I cook a case of butts at a time a couple times a year for church socials I'd be tempted to swap my pellet in. Don't fret though cause I may get one later anyway for the high searing ability for steaks and pizza I hear this thing is great for. I can't wait to hear what they say after they get it and start smoking. This is the kind of smoke she will like to smell.
  3. New to this whole thing, have I over rubbed my spatchcock? And yes, lets the jokes roll LOL!
  4. Alarm went off at 6 am as usual and I was laying out the lump and apple wood by 6:05. I got the Akorn fired up nice and slow like, made some coffee and watched it slowly climb to 225. Put on my rubbed 5lb boneless butt and thus began my day. I was aiming for a true low and slow cook but she settled in at 270 and hung there so I rolled with it. 6 hours later I pulled it off at 205* and foiled it and added a touch of apple juice since dinner was still several hours away. I choked the Akorn down a bit and put it back on for another hour and then into the cooler wrapped in towels. The timing was perfect as my Maverick ET 732 showed up yesterday afternoon in the mail. I love it! It made it so easy and took a lot of the stress out of it. I used a KC rub on it and did not inject as it was a pre injected cut. The wait time in the cooler and foil compromised the bark a bit but it pulled apart very easily with only one small dryer section on the small end. Even that piece was moist enough, but barely. The rest was perfect, at least as perfect as I have ever have had before. I was tickled that my first one came out so well. I have read here that butts are very forgiving so I shouldn't have been surprised but it still was a great feeling when it pulled apart so easily and so moist. I threw on some chicken breasts to put in the fridge for tomorrow and they look great as well. I am absolutely loving kamado grilling and smoking.
