  1. Hello. New user to the KJ forum but not this site. I graduated from an Akorn to a KJ 3 Classic. I did a lot of work on the Akorn to get it running like a clock but my son-in-law decided that I needed a new kamado. Hence, the arrival of a new KJ3 Classic on my 75th birthday. I was overjoyed! I listed my Akorn for free, on NextDoor and a guy roared over to get it. Glad it went to a good home. So, within a week and three cooks, the KJ has developed a problem. I cooked a pizza last night which got the temp close to 500 deg by the end. When I pulled the pizza off, I noticed that the latch wouldn't work. The top just bangs down because the dome is too far forward. Further inspection today shows that the dome is not aligned correctly. The left rear near the hinge is over 1/2" off. So,why did this happen and what is the fix? I called BBQ Guys where is was purchased. They sent the receipt and told me to register it. I did. They also asked me for pix of the issue. I sent them. Waiting for a response. Weird that the issue showed up after the highest temp cook. After it cooled, it still has the problem. Wondered if moving the grill a few feet caused the issue. That should not be a problem as it is on a KJ 3 Classic stock stand. I checked all of the bolts for tightness. All seems correct. Thanks, Tom
  2. Just bought a Kamado Joe Classic II about 5 days ago. Love almost everything about it so far but there is one thing that has me a bit concerned. The hinge seems to be making an audible creaking noise both when being opened and closed. I didn’t notice this at all when I first bought the cooker. Didn’t really seem to notice until after the 2nd cook or so. Is this a common sound with the grill, or something that will go away with time, or is this something I should be investigating? Hinge seems to work fine. I did tighten it to fine tune it but other than that it’s just the sound.
  3. I’m having this issue where my lid will not stay open. My joe is 2 weeks old. It’s the 2017 version. I’ve tried reading online to find a fix and I’m just stuck what I have tried to do so far is hold the bottom bolt and take the top but and screw it counter clockwise(doing it is just weird and awkward ). The top and bottom never touched but they got close. I figured I wasn’t doing anything when I noticed nothing had change. Can an anyone be if any help. I’ll even trade you one of my recipes
  4. After assembling the grill and doing the first burn I noted that the lid is now canted down and back. This results in a gap at the back of about 1/2 inch and the front of the lid is positioned 1/2 inch toward the back. Because of that position, the piston that the lid plate rests on is too far back and keeps the lid raised slightly. I finally was able to speak with PB customer service. They advised to add washers to the hinge bolts to change the angle of the lid. After taking the hinge off, I find it impossible to get it back on the bolts. Has anyone had this problem? Was I foolish to follow instructions from customer service? Aaaarrrggghhh!!! I'll be on the phone to them again tomorrow. Sigh...
  5. Would anyone here know where I may be able to find the hinge assembly for a large big green egg? The shell is in good shape but the hinge, bands and firebox have seen better days. I would rather purchase used vs buy new if anyone has an old one laying around. Thanks for reading! - J
  6. Hi There, I'm in search of some parts for a large BGE. Specifically the belly band hinge system. I'm attempting to bring some new life to an old BGE so I'll take any parts I can get as the hardware on this kamado is in rough shape but the shell is pristine. Thanks for taking the time to read. Please let me know if you have any questions. - Jeremy
  7. Hi everyone, Thanks for making me get a Kamado Joe. I have had it for 3 weeks and it has made some of the best meals from the backyard that I have ever had. Well today I was shocked to see that the dome is not closing flush on the hinge end. Also, I noticed that the hinge is getting worn when I open the lid and is chipping the paint now. I wonder if this occurred when I had by KJ up to 700F on tuesday?! Anyway, what should I do here? Matt
  8. Hi All, I few people have asked me about replacing the bands and hinge on my BigJoe. I thought, rather than respond to private messages, I would post here. My bigjoe arrived in February, and it appeared to have a slight alignment issue. This was fixed by replacing the band and hinge. My replacement bands and hinge arrived with the springs separated. I used a clamp to compress the spring and slide it into the hinge, secure the spring with the large bolt. I think the pictures below, and your current bigjoe should help you understand. These bolts are what applies the tension to the hinge. If the bolts are not tight enough the dome will not stay open. do not tighten the bolts yet, we will cover that more later. Notice the pins in the interior front and back of the bands, these pins fit into groves cut into the ceramic. Ok, the replacement bands and hinges are ready, time to take apart the old one. I had a friend to help me. I would suggest you do too, but I imagine it could be done alone if need be. We will be removing the top band from the dome first. 1) have a friend hold the handle steady. Remove the nut and bolt. Peel the band out if the grove. The dome will stay in place, as you get to the end the spring tension will lift the band up. You just completed the second hardest part. 2) remove the nut and bolt from the bottom band. Peel back this band and remove it. 3) optional, move the dome, this will give you more room to work. This is a good time to replace gaskets. 4) replace, the band assembly startling my bolting the lower band in place. 5) this is where the friend comes in, I lifted the dome while my friend wrapped the band around it. Once the band is wrapped around the dome, you can lower it and bolt it tight. 6) tighten both bolts as much as you can. Pictures to follow. Please, ask any questions...others might have a better sequence events.
  9. Hi, just picked up my Akorn yesterday, got it put together last night. The construction quality overall seems pretty good, but my grill has some problems that seriously affect its functionality. There is a lot of free play in the bolts that form the axis for the hinge, resulting in both vertical and lateral movement in the lid. On top of this, the latch makes no contact with the hook, and does nothing to seal the lid of the grill. Are these common problems with this grill? What is my best bet to rectify these problems? I had high hopes for this grill based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews, but I am disappointed right now.
