As a s follow-up to my first Grill dome restoration (see http://www.kamadoguru.com/topic/10848-grill-dome-rebuild-project/?p=118416), I'm planning a second Grill Dome restoration later this year. One consideration will be to re-glaze instead of a re-paint. Unlike other Kamado's that use a glazed surface, Grill Dome's have a heat resistant paint surface. The challenge will be to locate a local potter equipped with a kiln large enough to fit the GD. If it proves successful, I may also choose to repaint my original rebuilt GD (see picture below) as it has since chipped again due to some issues with the refinishing process. Just curious - for those of you who own glazed Kamados (i.e. Vision, BGE, KJoe), have you ever experienced any issues with the finish?

Last summer, I was given a "hand-me-down" Grill Dome which had chipped under prolonged exposure to extreme weather. I decided to do a complete overhaul. This included repairing chips, rebuilding missing sections, and a full repaint using a high-temp wrinkle finish. I also ordered a brand-new kevlar/nomex weave gasket which was custom-sized for the Grill Dome (more on that in a separate post). The owners of Grill Dome graciously spent a lot of time with me by phone and via email to explain in detail all the considerations for my project. Below are pictures of the various stages - from stripping paint, to resurfacing, repainting, through to the final build. It was a fun project and I learned a lot! As a result of my first success, I inherited a second cooker which I plan to strip down and re-build this summer. I plan on applying a new high-heat ceramic paint and if all goes as planned, this cooker will look like nothing you have ever seen! Enjoy. KCobra

Hi. I am new too the board. I love my Char-Griller Akorn and have had it almost 3 years. Unfortunately, it recently got way too hot and now is in need of an overhaul I have the crimson red version, but now has a black ring around it where paint burned off (where cover meets bottom half as well as around vent structure up top due to the heat) when it went well past the 700 degrees on the thermometer. I have a few questions I am asking for help with below. Some more background....I've never properly seasoned the grate so that is my first step using Pam and heating to 400 degrees for an hour. Also, I have pinched the gasket after my disaster cook and that seems to have bounced back fine. 1. Inside of top of grill is kind of a brown/rust color after this incident. I lightly brushed and wiped with a wet cloth the next day, but after my next cook it still doesn't look right. Prior to this I would experience the black flakiness that others have mentioned and would brush periodically. But how do I clean this current situation? 2. I would like to try and match the original color as best as possible, but am having trouble. I have linked color I have below. I'm going to use a flat high-heat paint for the black legs and bottom stand, but I think I need a gloss for red to be consistent with how a new Char-griller Akorn--correct? Finding a dark red, high heat paint in gloss is proving to be difficult. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Char-Griller-AKORN-20-in-Red-Silver-Kamado-Charcoal-Grill/50387508 3. Any other tips/advice welcome?!?!? I am so bummed this happened and am kicking myself, but hoping you all can help.

I noticed after 2 low and slow and 2 high heat jobs that my grill has a weird light grey or whitish haze over the red it came in. I doesn't feel different, but it does look strange. Is this the paint coming off? What could it be. I haven't seen it on anyone else's pictures. Thanks, Chandra

So I've finished my charcoal basket, and my guy just called and said the drum is sandblasted and ready to go. I figure I need to get that baby oiled (inside) and painted (outside) before any rust sets in. I'm trying to decide if I want to use a matte or glossy finish on the drum. Anybody here have preferences? Cons? Pros? I'll be sure to upload a pic or 2 when I get her ready.
