  1. Hi! As anyone ever try this? The ash tray area on my KJ3 is about 2.25" in height and about 9" in depth... I'm looking to get the A-Maze-N oval expandable tube smoker 7in-12in. I already have a pellet maze smoker (5"x8") that goes in the fire box and it produces smoke for about 8-9 hours. So the idea would be to keep the smoking going with the tube smoker in the ash tray when the maze smoker is done without disassembling my cold smoke setup to add more pellets in the maze smoker... Already spoke with CS at Pit-Boss and they told me that the oval diameters are 2.5"x2" on one side and 2.25"x1.75" on the other side... So, I think it would fit perfectly but would like to know if anyone had any experience with these in the ash tray? Thanks!
  2. New toy for Akorn pitmasters! I made a pellet grill conversion on my Akorn in June and now it's going into production. Basically I ripped out a pellet feeder from a small pellet grill and made an adapter at the bottom of the Akorn grill. I just got the patent pending status so I can post it now. Here is a write up on the project. I'll update when we got the production prototype made...probably within a month. https://bbqube.us/Turn-Your-Akorn-Kamado-into-a-Pellet-Grill-with-BBQube-Pellet-Conversion-Kit_b_15.html?draft=1
  3. Struggling with this one... I love using my Kamado for low & slow cooks however with two young kids I struggle to find the time. I’m trying to determine the best approach for a “set it & forget it” option. I am looking to either purchase a temp controller such as an iKamand that I will have to figure out how to rig to my old school Kamado Co. or just bite the bullet and purchase a pellet smoker. The way I see it, one of these controller’s is going to run me $250. Maybe I’m better off dropping another few hundred and getting a pellet set up considering the application will be primarily for low & slow smoking. Any suggestions on the preferred option? If you’re leaning towards the pellet smoker option, any recommendations? My top 3 based solely on internet research is Rec Tec, Traeger and Grilla. Thanks for your feedback! -J
  4. Thanks to Jeri for the idea of smoking chili. It finally is cool enough the wife and I thought we'd give chili a try. Since the cans of tomato sauce, diced, and crushed were so large it took two pots. I had'nt used bacon in my chili before but we had some extra in the fridge I needed to get rid of. I also not only used burger but stew meat and even some bacon. Never put bacon in my chili before but hay, everything goes better with bacon, right? Have with held the can of chunk tomatos till near the end. Also with holding any paste to see how it tastes in an hour or so. Will let you know how it comes out.
  5. I used gas for years then found pellet smokers. I've been smoking with pellets for 6 years and love it. My daughter grew up, moved to Ohio and got married. Now she misses my smoked food. Since pellet smokers cost so much to run I knew that that wouldn't be a good choice for them. I did my research and found the Acorn at Lowes. After I had all the options pros and cons I got with my new son and said I'll splurge for a smoker for you'll in this range. I told him pros and cons of gas(with smoke box), indirect charcoal, stick, electric, and the Acorn. He asked if he could have some time to decide. Although I wanted to get it then and try it out (I figured he'd decide on the Acorn or the electric Masterbuilt ) I knew I would do the same thing so I said take time to research and decide. Alas I had to fly home before he decided. As you can guess, as soon as I arrived home I got word he had done the research and has decided on the Acorn. Since they will be moving soon I told them lets wait till they actually move so the unit doesn't have to go through a move needlessly. I'm glad I found this site and will be telling him. If it weren't for the fact that I cook a case of butts at a time a couple times a year for church socials I'd be tempted to swap my pellet in. Don't fret though cause I may get one later anyway for the high searing ability for steaks and pizza I hear this thing is great for. I can't wait to hear what they say after they get it and start smoking. This is the kind of smoke she will like to smell.
  6. My Amazen Products 5x8 pellet smoker arrived today so I filled it up and tossed it in the Kamado Joe Classic to let it burn for a while. I'm running a test to see how much it raises the temp inside the kamado. I'm hoping this setup doesn't raise the temp as much as the tube smoker does. If it doesn't this will be the perfect setup for cold smoking cheese. I moved the smoker into the firebox below the diffuser and then set my temp probe on the grill to watch it....
