BBQ Accessories: THE REALLY RIGHT STUFF

Recommended Posts

Great idea for a thread.  I have the Thermopop, TimeStick, ChefAlarm and the Extra Loud/Big Timer.  All great products.

I just wish Thermoworks made a product to directly compete with the Maverick 733.  The BlueTherm Duo uses bluetooth and is too expensive.  The TW8060 would be killer if it had a handheld receiver.

My wonderful wife got me an iGrill2, it works fantastic via Bluetooth.

Congrats! I really like mine! You should check http://idevicesinc.com/news/57/ to confirm if yours is affected by the probe recall in case it was an older one still in stock. Enjoy!

I check, a warning popped up when I down loaded the app. All clear.
Great news, happy cooking! Also one heads up that this device is not weatherproof so if it looks like wet weather put a baggie over it. Have fun!

I have a dry bag we use for kayaking. Works perfect. I don't do a lot a bad weather grilling unless if falls on a function.

For instant read the themapop will get the job done, however, I would not Q without a thermapen. It's fast and effective !!!

http://www.thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/

I love my thermapen. I recently got a ThermoPop and  Mavreick Pro Temp for my son for Christmas.  Of course I had to try them out.The Thermo Pop seems just as fast as the Thermapen. I love the lit display on the Pro Temp but it seems to hunt more as compared to the Thermapen.

OK - I'm in the market for a new Maverick (or other brand) temp monitoring device.

I currently have the Maverick ET72 (yeah, she's old) - which only has one temp monitoring probe.

I also have a thermopop.

What say you?

Are the iGrill's worth it?

What is the difference between the Maverick ET 733 vs ET 732?

Any other recommendations for this purpose?

I've got most of the products John listed.  The instant read Thermopop is great.  The $100 folding probe fast read is fantastic but you have to open/close it with each use.  I know, I know, the injustice of life.    The one item that I love, especially in competition cooking is the Thermoworks Timestick.   I competition we cook on a large reverse flow offset smoker which requires attention, not like our kamado's which are sit it and forget it cookers.  With some much going on at competition it's nice to have a timesick with lanyard around my neck which reminds me it's time to add another chimney of charcoal, then it's set for the next action on the cook timeline to prep for.

The Timesticks are great Big Steve. If you don't like the folding feature of the Thermapen (I really don't either) try one of these TempTests. I keep one in both my pitt and  kitchen and they have become my favorites. They are especially great for left-handers. They are 100% waterproof and the holster can be wall mounted or clipped to a belt. They are currently on sale for $85.00......

John I notice that you do not list the Maverick PT-100 on your list. Do you now prefer the ThermoPop?

In looking at the Amazon ratings for both the ThermoPop and the ThermaPen the rating are consistently 5 star.

Even now there are quite a few very low ratings for both accuracy and time to register for the PT-100. It would seem that either some of the old ones are still being sold or that the quality control is not consistent.

I have had a PT 100 for about a year and love it. I have had no issues at all and at half the price of a thermopen, to me it's a no-brainer.

If you look at the Amazon reviews from most recent instead of the most helpful option you will see that there are mostly 5 star reviews.

  • 3 months later...

I have the Primo version of the Mav ET 732. As far as I can tell it's also the same as the trager pellet unit with the only difference being that I paid more than twice as much because it says Primo. Hate it. I am done with it as of last night. After I pulled the probe out of the meat I purposely let the unit fall off the side shelf of the grill onto the ground and left it there. It takes constant tinkering with the probe to not read "ttt" on the display. That and if the timer goes off it stops alerting after 30 seconds. There have been times where I didn't know it went off and was not within 30 second earshot. Used in a kitchen it could cause a house fire. No bueno.

My biggest gripe about the Maverick lineup is the probes.  I have killed two or three probes within the past year and as they failed, replacements were ordered.  The new maverick 735 probes appear to be better sealed and are supposed to work with the 732/733 models as well.  Three of the 735 probes have been ordered and should be here in a few days.  I will report back on my impressions.  Of course, the most important thing will be how they last in comparison to the older series of probes.  That bit of information will not be known for a few months.  As has been said before, the main purpose of the Maverick is "social". When SWMBO asks when dinner will be ready, the Maverick display is pointed at, and I say "hmmm the meat needs to go up another 20 degrees".  That way the Maverick gets the stink-eye, and not the cook.  As long as SWMBO can see the progress on a display, she is less likely to be anxious about meal completion time.  Peace at home has a value which greatly exceeds the cost of a Maverick and replacement probes.

I'm gonna do some baby backs this weekend and would like to hear some opinions.

      1. Temp. I'm thinking low and slow at about 225 to 250
      2. Time - wrapped vs. unwrapped. 5 1/2 hours ish?

I used to do mine in a pellet with the 3-2-1 method, although for BB's I did 3-1-.5.

Let me hear your methods and why.

      Looking for opinions....
Vision B, lava stone with hanger
Reading posts here and looking at pictures of your rigs, I have a question.
On line at different stores and amazon, I see a lot of spiders that will pretty much just replace the cross bars that hang the lava rock. There are also many variations that will raise the main grate to the felt line. Not considering all the options that raise the grate higher in the dome and slide in and out for various configurations of stones, half stones and additional grates for more levels of cooking and additional volume, how much does raising the main  grate from the OEM position to the felt like make?
Pros? Cons? Improved temp and heat distribution? I realize it may be easier to access, Is that about it?
