Maybe we just need more Facebook-style click-bait threads...."John Setzler put his butt on the Kamado....you won't believe what happened next!"

Guys,

The change in policy shouldn't cause any mass defections. Any changes you make to website paid or otherwise will always come at the risk of loosing some members. If you have a popular site, they usually get replaced by others in 3-4 months time.

The point I'm making about "paid forums" not working is in reference to using paid forums to generate revenue for a website. Paid forums sections don't work to generate revenue for website anymore. I'm strictly taking dollars and cents.

I'm 32 and a gamer, geek, it guy and love to cook. Just got married and other associated costs which suck for now as budget is tight. Love this website and the people I have met. My biggest issue was the original larger sum payments. With the cheaper monthly option it is nice.

I am one who paid money to play MMOs for years too. I also know its not cheap to run websites and popular forums. Though I am wondering if there might be a cheaper hosting option out there that might make it easier on the admin?? Just wondering I use Tapatalk to post pictures as they host it but do you allow pictures to be uploaded to the site?? I know my friends car forum that they run they had to stop that due to higher traffic over time and high use of their bandwidth.

People normally move their sites to the Netherlands to cut costs. The US based Hosting companies are expensive in comparison. Even with a move to the Nerherlands. You're still looking at $1000 - $1200 USD a year to host a sit of KG's size. Storage cost play a big factor in the cost of sites.

John should actually reduce the upload space for non-contributing members to 3.5 or 4 MB. That's 10-12 images in a post for most people. The 9 MB per a post should be reserved for supporting members.

IPS allows you to control the MB allocated to members to adjusted by member groups.

Moving to a host in the Netherlands would reduce the costs.

That goes against the "Buy American", culture in the US.

On the Flipside:

Charging for access forums doesn't work on the internet these days. It's too difficult to generate the unique and exclusive content required incentivize people to pay for memberships to access paid forums. People are used to accessing forum sections for free. It's a tough sell.

I've tried paid forums for the Manchester Soccer Club, a DJ site, Gaming forum, a Women's Shoe forum, ect..none of those efforts suceeded and they all resulted in backlash from members and declines in the page ranking for the sites. It's not easy to convince people to pay for access to forums outside of Adult oriented websites.

Charging for access certainly seems to work well for Meathead at his Forum, The Pit, over at Amazing Ribs.  He charges $25 per year.  I have a website that I charge $500 per year for access and I'm doing quite well, thank you. I charge 10 payments of $50 each and I can charge more.  I know content marketeers who charge anywhere from $35 per month to $1,000 a year for access and they are cleaning up.  People will pay for quality content. Maybe what you have offered was judged by your customers to be absolutely worthless. Kamado Guru is quality content.  Were it not, why do you waste your time here?

Could it be that you simply don't know as much as you think you know?  Maybe you don't know this business half as well as you would have others believe.  Just an observation.

I never said you can't make money selling content. I said it's very hard to make money on selling content and very few people are successful or willing to invest the time to successfully create paid content. You're right, it is possible. There's nothing unique in the forum sections that were locked down that would drive people to pay money when the same content is available free on BBQ Brethen, KJ forum, Egghead forum, ect...

Meathead has a social following and a lot of unique well thought out content. He has something unique to charge a fee to access.

There are people making money selling access to content operate their sites as for profit businesses and they have content stratagies in place to drive revenue.

"The Cooler" Fourm is not generating content that's worth paying for.

It's obvious that the battle lines have been drawn. Look at the 'likes' and you will see over and over who is on the John side of this discussion. The other side is less defined. I'm not taking sides either way. My original objection was the taking away of the cooler section. I would go there to converse with friends about anything but Kamado. I always liked that section but now it seems that the old friends have taken up the battle and it has become personal and not at all kind to the other readers. So my attitude has changed. No, I'm not going to pay for something that I think should be open to everyone. Right now I'm not going anywhere because I want to see how this plays out. People pay for porn and Netflix because they want to see it. Quite frankly the cooler is not that interesting except to the chosen few. If they want to pay for it fine.

I hope this whole thing will be settled by general election time. This dividing of friends was probably backed by HillandBill.

I agree with @CK what a jip, I clicked it and got notta. At least when I click a link here in the non-subscribed part of the forum I get inspiration through great food pictures. But wait there's more @CK, I can often get great recipies. Ho ho ho that's still not enough, well when I've asked technical questions of someone's dish or techniques they willingly share it with me. What a great concept and group of people. [emoji1]

When I contributed, I did so to support the forum, not necessarily for the supporter content.  I believe that this is somehow getting lost here.  I really don't think the administrators are hosting this forum to make $$.  If that were the case, I think we would see banner ads on the sides of the forum, and so forth.  How many times a day do we visit this site?  How much enjoyment and belly pleasure comes from KG?

I believe it's less defined due to the amount of likes allowed for none supporters, we are only allowed 3 a day and I'd rather use them for cooks I've seen or tables being built.

Boom! Done.

For less than a few percent of the cost of all my equipment I've invested in something I expect will help me maximize my use of it.

Just not that hard a decision.

Awesome, now you will have acces to the amazing discussion about my upcoming purchase of new binoculars in the cooler section. A bunch of great and helpful info to me, please jump in the convo if you feel the urge.
