Granddad kamado rebuild

Recommended Posts

I picked up two half-moon 13" kiln shelves at Manassas Clay to use as deflector plates this past Saturday.  So this weekend I spent time building my x-rack to hold the deflector plates.  They aren't pretty looking, but I enjoyed fabricating them. I think I just liking creating/building 'stuff'   The x-rack is basically 1/8" aluminum bars, bent to fit the firebox and some stainless steel fasteners.   The new gaskets should arrive tomorrow.

Now if I only had a welder...

the new gasket was installed this past Friday, and I had my 1st firing.  I still don't have a proper top vent for controlling the temp, and I used a couple different piece of sheet metal with different size holes drilled.    The bottom vent was wide open, and it's going to take time to learn how to control the temp.. The 1st firing settled in around 280-290F.

I will likely have a couple more practice firings before cook on it.  My next weekend or two looks busy (big international tropical fish convention this weekend in the DC area) so it will be  another week or two before I can practice again.
