Kick Ash Basket with or without charcoal grate

Recommended Posts

For those of you who use Kick Ash baskets, do you leave the charcoal grate in or take it out?  The instructions with Kick Ash basket say you can do it either way. Just wanted to see how others are doing it and if it makes any difference if you are grilling or doing a LNS cook.  I just started using one with the KJ Jr. and plan on getting one for my KJ Classic.  Just trying to ease the learning curve.

I took mine out and put it on a shelf in the garage. My thought in using the basket is to make it easier to remove old ash & charcoal.  If you still have the original charcoal grate in place, it collects small pieces of charcoal and potentially blocks the holes and thus, slows air flow.

Also, I have heard at least a couple of times that people shake their basket inside of the grill.  To each their own but I (gently) take my basket out of the grill completely, walk to an out of the way space in the backyard and shake it there.  No need to clog up the grill with more small, junk charcoal and ash than is needed.  You're going to have to clean it out anyway, why make it a 2-step process?

I took my charcoal grate out, too, and haven't missed it in my Joe Jr. I do my shaking in the Joe Jr.'s fire bowl and transfer to metal pail  because in dry, dry central-south Texas I don't want a surviving piece of hot lump setting the backyard on fire.

I wish I could take mine out, but I have the older style basket with the thinner gauge steel, and for that one it's not recommended. :(

I tried both ways. Ended up leaving the grate out. Not because I saw any difference, it's just that it was the second way I tried and I put the grate in my shed and didn't want to walk back there to get it again.

I took mine out as well, like others have said, I haven't noticed a difference but it is easier to see how much ash I have in the bowl before clean up. I also use the grate as a hot plate for my place setter when it's hot.

I leave mine CI grates in with the Kickash baskets. Both of the bases on my Big Joe's cracked at the bottom. Although the ash drawers may have caused the cracks in the bases, I've become a little more paranoid about my care regime for my babies. I leave the CI grate in and turn the Kickash baskets slightly to make sure the wires are not blocking any holes in the CI grate.
