Cast iron heat deflector

Anyone use cast iron for a heat deflector?  I'm thinking of setting some kind of cast piece on a spider.  I did it with a cheap pizza stone and the stone broke first time out.  Cast is cheap too, like me:-D

Check out the offerings from Ceramic Grill Store.  I've been using one of their stones as a deflector and it's been holding up great!  That leaves the cast iron for me to use as a griddle or pizza "stone".

I almost bought one when I got a couple spiders.  I had a 13" stone I used on the bottom grate that worked fine, but it was a $12 stone from Amazon and the first time on the spider down in the bowl was it.  Never had a problem when it was on the bottom grate, matter of fact it broke clean into 2 pieces so I just put it back on the bottom grate.  I might have to break down and get one from CGS.

I use this guy with the lava rock the grill came with. IMG_6371.JPG

Raises first grate to felt gasket. Works great with just enough room around it. Was less then 50 bucks. It's a 16" bayou classic cast iron skillet. Got it on Amazon. It will also rest on the firebox but I didn't want to put cast iron right on the ceramics

I don't want to cook on it, and drippings should keep it from rusting.

The underside exposed to charcoal will get very hot and not be protected from rusting.  That being said a 1/4 inch piece of CI will take a long time to rust through. I bet you will get a fair lifespan /$$ spent.
