How do I get my Big Joetisserie to fit?

Recommended Posts

Greetings... I want to see if I can be of any assistance in solving this problem.  Meghan from KJ contacted me to see if I had any insight.  I haven't seen this particular problem before.  Is there any 'play' with the joetisserie that will allow it to slide around any or is it a very tight fit inside the base of the grill?

I am trying to determine if the problem is 1) a size issue with the joetisserie (not likely) or 2) a size issue with the Big Joe (more likely.)

Is there a Joe dealer near you?  I would love to know if that Joetisserie would fit on a different grill?  I am not sure what the solution is here.  I have seen some problems posted where the Joetisserie would not physically fit into the big joe.  This one, however, seems to fit but the lid won't close which makes me thing there is a size/tolerance issue.

John,

The Joetisserie sits in the bottom of the grill fine, there is some play front to back and side to side. The pictures show it all the way forward and all the way back. IMG_1229.thumb.JPG.f5ea84e9247d576c5c00f399787aadd2.JPGIMG_1230.thumb.JPG.2108991013075a2dff8262ebcb3ea5e7.JPG

This is a measurement of the back of the Joetisserie, the thinnest part. Is this roughly the same for others?IMG_1227.thumb.JPG.9357be55c84e434771ac7205774b0284.JPG

Some other angles:

I am actually stationed in Okinawa Japan, I believe KJ world domination is in the future but it hasn't made it here yet so there is no dealer. In fact it took almost 8 weeks to ship the Joetisserie here. I will send all these pictures to Meghan as well.

I do appreciate all the help with this, I was hoping it was something easy that I was over looking.

I'm not an expert but I'm guessing your lid may already be sitting tighter at the back then the front without the Joetisserie. I noticed the gasket on the base of my Classic showing wear like that's what it's doing. I suspect although I'm getting an air seal all around that the back is compressing and rubbing more than the front and I would think that would show up like what you have when adding a Joetisserie. Sorry I don't have a Joetisserie to prove my theory.

Lumpy Coal, my lid does fit a little tighter in the back so you may have something here. The gasket is more compressed than in the front, however I think that would be a very small adjustment to even it out and not enough to get the lid to close. I am a little hesitant to adjust the lid since it fits great without the Joetisserie, but it may come to that if there are no other solutions.

Try this, with the JT in. Loose the top and bottom band bolt.  Do not remove them, just loosen enough that they both wiggle when you open and close the dome.   Place Jt in and close the dome.   See if you can realign everything.  Then check the alignment without the JT.

Edit, this is more likely to work with the new gasket. I don't think it will work with the old gasket.

I think you are chasing your tail adjusting the bands to make the JT fit, unless you plan on only using the JT all the time. It would get quite annoying to adjust the top bands every time you swap out. From what I read, the JT is designed as a drop in fit, and not an adjust to fit item.

I just posted on the facebook page I too am having the same issue stated here its only at the front of the BJ anything from the spit rod back is tight as a cabs as* (lol) im kinda disapointed to be honest @ $400 this is not cheap. I'm not sure what the fix is i have a half in gap at the front of mine  lid closes tight without the BJT. I added bbq felt gasket to help close the gap it has helped but still does not pass the paper test close but still has no drag. I've contacted KJ not sure what there gonna tell me? in the mean time i have a grill basket that's gonna make me some good wings tonight on the BJT come hell or high water!!.

It only takes a small interference at the back to make a much larger gap at the front. I stand behind my theory of lid adjustment. The gasket just made the difference before.

Eventually when everybody upgrades to the new hinge, the issues will be gone.  The fit is very tight on the older KJ's because the height was increased slightly to accommodate the new counterbalanced hinge.

Unfortunately that could be years before I meet to replace my hinge..

Did I miss something? The last that i knew the new hing does not fit the old KJ models. Some people were quite upset. Is there a new development?

Bobby announced on FB that they were working on a retrofit option of the BigJoe.  I though it was reposted here, maybe I even did it.

That is good news for those who wanted the new hinge so badly. Personally I have had no problems with my current hinge. I do hope that it fits the BJ Jotisserie that i will have to get. Guess I need to include Facebook in my browsing. Of course it is not real until it crosses from the mental realm into the physical one. Bobby has done awesome things in revolutionizing the Kamado so we shall see.

Mine fits fine on the older joe. There is a small gap in the back of mine, but thats because I have a small gap in the back WITHOUT the joetiss in there. I've sucked at trying to figure out how to eliminate that gap lol. But it cooks wonderfully

I've noticed with mine that even though it fits and seals fine ( no dollar bill test but no smoke seeping out either)  , that it seems a little hinge bound in the back but guess there is enough weight on the dome to over come it. Then yesterday as I was fitting it on I noticed the gasket as worn down quite a bit in the back but have no idea if it's because of the Joetessrie , I'll just keep watching it.

In turn makes me wonder if or when I go with the new gaskets will they be thicker then the felts ones as this might cause a problem.
