Hey Jack...I cut my teeth at a very early age cooking on a hibachi cooker for the family. My Dad was not a grillmaster, and bought a hibachi for the family burgers, steaks, kielbasa etc., but wasn't the most proficient at cooking meat. When I was 10, he passed the grilling responsibilities onto me, and somehow, I learned to make the meat edible on the same type of device! You can do some amazing things with that cooker, and I appreciate your post bringing back some great memories for me! Good luck and enjoy!!!!!

Your story is very similar to mine. My dad bought a CI hibachi grill when I was about 6 years old. It was a CI rectangular grill with raisable 1/2 grates. He wasn't the best grill master as my mom cooked almost every breakfast and dinner. But he tried with the steaks and burgers. Fond memories for sure.

Thanks, Big Dawg. Years ago I had one of those hibachis with the two slotted vertical risers in the back which held the cooking grates cantilevered at various heights from the fire.  Of course, the cast iron was of such poor quality that the cooking grates warped and bent form the stress.  That and a Weber kettle. Good memories, indeed.

I still love cooking over an open flame or a tamed bed of hardwood embers.
