Yes you will will have a much easier time (it's almost cheating in comparison) dialing and maintaining the low and slow temp once the leaks are taken care of. The trick I have found is not necessarily how much vents should be closed (although this is a part of it), but knowing when to start closing the vents during warm up based on the rate the temp is increasing. I can call it now on the PB.

Yeah, I think the bottom vent on my Akorn is the culprit, I just haven't dug into it yet to resolve with some additional RTV caulk. My other concern with the Pit Boss and buying it through costco is lugging it back there if/when the bowl cracks. I really wish they would just send you a new bowl, but reading in other threads that is not the case. I guess that's the price you pay for such a good deal at $399.

I don't think the bowl cracking is the norm. Few and far between in other words. The old style firebox did crack but that is the norm for all Kamados that don't have a split design. The PB has an updated firebox with a split that extends the entire box which allows for expansion.

The other difference between the Akorn is that it will take the Akorn a lot longer to come back up to temp when you open the lid regardless of air leaks. Due to not being ceramic it looses heat a lot faster and therefor takes longer to come back up to temp. The PB come back up and holds very quick due to the ceramic retaining heat.

Are you talking about the firebox or the actual bottom grill bowl?  The cracking of the bottom bowl is not as uncommon as you may think.  You should just be realistic about it.  All Ceramic bowls crack regardless of brand, BGE, KJ, Pit Boss.  The firebowl is inside which hold the lump.  That cracking it much more common as it takes more heat stress, but those Danson will ship a new one to you house no problem.

I have had 2 grill bottom bowls crack on me.  So have multiple other Pit Boss owners, I can think off the top of my head 6+. Its fine, don't worry about it, but just don't be surprised when it happens.

Day late, and a $ short. My Costco just sold the last one at $399 last night. Bummer, oh well, guess I'll have to make the best of my Akorn til next year. Maybe they'll add some new features!
