kontrol tower top vent paint/coating issue

Recommended Posts

I cook on my BGE every so often without a top when I'm going over 350 dome temperature.

The Kamado Joe vent is miles better then my cast iron vent. I'd be peeling it off and using it even after the new one arrives because knowing me. it will eventually hit the pavement and break. Never hurts to have spare parts around when something like that happens. Though the way this vent functions I don't ever see a need to remove it.

Thanks for the dogpile. I access this website through Tapatalk which does not show the terms of service at the top of every forum. Thank you for the link.

Not sure why you think I gave you a dogpile. I use Tapatalk exclusively, but did have to open in the Web browser to find the answer. Really I was just trying to help. [emoji108]

IDK, At the end of the day it is a grill. It isn't electricity that you need to power your home. Hopefully you still have your first top that you can use until resolution is made. I think sometimes we lose our heads in the time of instant gratification due to the mindset of all the electronics we have in such a connected world. Let the KJ people have a bit to make things right. I know they will.

I just received a message from KJ Support at 9:30 EST with an update on replacement domes for my Big Joes.  The support team is working long hours to help everyone who needs help.

It's unfortunate anyone needs to replace their top vents.  The KJ support team is working crazy hours to make sure everyone is looked after.  You will get looked after.

After all I read after the top vent paint problem which I have, gonna wait until the dust settles.  Fairly confident I will be taken care of. Slightly bummed but not devastated. Still able to cook just fine. Happy that I got a great product at a fair price.

We all have been shorted with a product problem of any brand or sort in our past experiences, that may drive a bit of negative vibes. I surmise what my father always told me. Patience is a virtue.

Not getting getting a bad vibe from KJ. That's reinforced by by the really great people on the site who have posted candid input for a long time. Hope they keep on.

Keeping "the picture" big.

Powder coating aluminum is extemely difficult.  It's not porous like Cast Iron.  Aluminum is completely non-porous and paint simply sits on top of the surface with zero absorbtion like glue.

My deck rails have the same issue with flaking paint on post caps.  You have to power coat aluminum at with no more than a .1 degree variance in temp, you also have to control the humidity in the room perfectly.

I'm not upset with KJ of the first batch did not come out perfect.

It's a shame that the interactions you've had with others in the past lead you to interpret what I said that way. It was my impression, given to me by my rep, that they ask everyone to upload and provide pictures / video to claim warranty for defective parts.

But to the point of the OP,  KJ has a serious issue to resolve. I'm going onto my 3rd vent for different problems.

I've always wondered why the aluminum needed to be power coated to begin with.  The aluminum could have been tinited and polished to give it a pewter finish that would have been very elegant.

It's easy to clean grease off Aluminum using a mild acid like Goo-off.  The vents would have looked perfectly fine in a silver finish.

i had always presumed it was cast iron because of the powder coat.  Since you informed me it was aluminum I have also wondered why the powder coat, or why folks care if it flakes off.  Am I missing something...some kamado s are completely aluminum with no powder coat.

I imagine it had something to do with the original color scheme found on pre 2017 grills
Also, if it was bare ally most people could confuse it with those aftermarket top vents that are SS

Personally, if it happens to mine i'll prob dunk it in an ultra sonic bath to get any loose paint off it and then keep using it
