horseshoes 1
Based on the date stamped on my KJC2, it was manufactured in nov 2018. After several smokes, my powder coat looks like many in this thread. At first I thought it was gunk, but after removing it to clean thoroughly, I noticed it has a little bit of gunk, but most of it is actually coating bubbling and peeling. Maybe I got old stock, but it seems like current units might still have the isue.

It’s hard to keep paint from stripping with Aluminum. It’s not a porous metal like CI. The paint only sits on the surface and will scrape off easily no matter what you do. rodny 11
My Kamado Joe II is 3 months old and the paint on the tower top vent after crack and peeled and I was wondering if there are any others grill owners with the same problem nowadays. I'll reach out to customer support, but I'm curious if others have experienced the same issue.

They covered it under the warranty. The replacement I had lasted about a year or so and the same thing has happened to the replacement. I justed wire brushed it and kept on using it. rodny
Cheers! 0
Same thing for my Big Joe 2 I bought end of Novemeber 2019. The paint is completely debonded and every time I clean the cap, more giant flakes come off.

I think I will just get it powder coated and be done with it. I got mine media blased back to bare metal Looks kinda cool now
JaxxQ 704
I gave up on KJ fixing this problem but I never filed a claim for this issue also because I thought it was petty, It is a smoker and things happen that I don't believe the manufacturer is responsible. With that said I finally went back to the smokeware cap, I wasn't happy the first time i tried them but IMO the new ones are better quality and so far so good
iBarbEQue 4
Is this issue still occurring in 2020? Matt Nudi

Is it better to go with the Smokeware cap? Yes it is. The powdercoating does not hold up. It has not been corrected. The kontrol tower works perfectly after the powdercoating comes off the contact surfaces. Combustication
JB912 0
Has anyone been able to order the Pro Kontrol Tower as that is Stainless Steel? Does it fit on the Classic I? I have a Classic I with the Cast Iron tower and was considering either the new Kontrol Tower or SmokeWare cap. The thing is I like that the cast iron has virtually no maintenance. I wipe the bottom of it once in a while but that is it so far.
Bgosnell151 1,375
Just over three years in and I wasn’t worried about the paint chipping in the inside. But now it is starting to look bad in the outside too. The paint chipping continued to spread to the point that it is chipping where the marks are for the settings. I’ve reached out to KJ on this one, but not sure if it’s a three year warranty or not. Either way, it still works great and I’ve already got more than my money out of it. Rinechek 0
I noticed the paint chipping after the first few cooks. I've had the grill for about 2 months at this point. I wasn't too worried about it and I went ahead and cleaned the kontrol tower with PBW as I'd seen recommended on the forum and any paint chips on the inside I brushed off with a towel. First cook after cleaning, I noticed the kontrol tower leaking more than it had previously. I had read that the kontrol tower seems to work the same wether the paint is on or chipped off. Has anyone else had that issue? Seems like it is OK keeping about 250, but I haven't done a long low and slow.
