Acorn nut on handle

Recommended Posts

Just looking for a bit of advice , I have a classic Joe and one of the nuts that attach the handle to the dome is no longer tightening and keeps popping off , I tried a different nut and the same thing happens , so it must be the bolt on the dome that is damaged , anybody got a simple fix for this preferably without removing the band's .

Thanks for your reply , would a regular epoxy for metal withstand the high temperature ok ? Guess it's worth a try . Seems like the 1st few threads on the bolt are damaged and nut isn't catching really don't want to have to remove band's to get to the bolt..

You can tell it the threads are bad by looking closely at them. If they are stripped out--no deep clean line of threads--then tapping the bolt for a smaller nut would be required. I think if that was attempted then the bolt would spin.

I do not think that gluing a nut on even with liquid steel would be a good fix because you need the handle to be held tight to the band so that it is held in place with friction from the clamping action of the nut and bolt. It might work if the nut initially clamped tight. If it tightens up then the red Loctite that Beermachine suggests is worth a try.

If you just want the handle captured on the bolt --then a washer and a cotter pin would work. but the handle was designed for all of the lifting bolts to secure it tight to the band. Each helps with the load.

You will IMO end up installing a new bolt and nut.

Once again thanks for your replies , if none of the above fixes work long term and the bolt needs replacing ,does anybody know if I remove the upper band will the bolt be easy to remove or is it actually in the ceramic ?

Should be just a plow bolt through the metal banding.

Contact KJ HQ & they will send you new plow bolts. I would change out both of them. Also you may need a new band tightening bolt & nut
