Bayou Classic overhaul....

 Share

Recommended Posts

I have used this grill for 11 years.  The firebox collapsed, so I either had to repair it or buy a new grill.  I decided on the former, because I could overhaul it much cheaper.

Getting an exact replacement for this is not possible.  It’s no longer made.  The Large BGE firebox would probably work, but I went another direction....

My new firebox choice- the new sectional Kamado Joe firebox.... https://www.bbqguys.com/kamado-joe/classic-multi-piece-firebox-kj-mpfb23

$100.

This caused a second issue- the fire ring is too tall.  It is about 6” tall, that is 2” too tall.  So I bought the Kamado Joe Classic fire ring, it. Fixes the problem.  About $65 delivered.

I could have stopped there, but I continued....

Cheap upgrades... (everyone should consider these)....

new thermostat

new bottom grate... Do this! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4EPPX6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

new seal

more expensive other things....

kick ash basket... Do this! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C9XJ28J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

new side tables https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017O7JNB8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

kamado joe classic joe divide and conquer system

new cast iron grill grate https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZHZWDM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

grill expander https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XTL6SZQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

what I have found....

this grill now works far better than it ever did.  It gets hotter, starts quicker, is more consistent in temps.  This all due to improved airflow, mostly due to the new bottom grate and the ash basket.  It is easier to clean as well.

Some interesting mods to extend the life of this cooker.  Great ideas.

I owned one until last year when a fellow brethren member took it off my hands as a donation and breathed new life into it.  It had suffered a fatal lid crack due to an issue with the band which I hadn't noticed. I wasn't willing to repair it so the Goldens' Cast Iron was purchased as its replacement.  There's a whole thread in the brethren forum about the BC Cypress restoration.

It was a decent grill for me,  had its quirks but served me well. I almost hated to see it go but was glad it for to cook another day.

Forgive my ignorance of this site, but what is the “brethren forum” on this site.  I have looked without success.

That is a complete different site. Search bbq brethren.

Sorry for the late reply.  The fire ring elevates the grill.  You could cook without it, but you’d have to elevate the grill in some way (stainless steel bolts, maybe?). It could be done, but it works better with the ring.  The original ring is 2” too tall with the new firebox. The 3” fire ring for the original Kamado Joe Classic is out there, you just have to look for it.  This is where I got mine,

Hey all,

I'm chiming in pretty late, but wanted to update the thread. Regarding the fire ring that's no longer available. I found one at Kamado King (www.kamadobbq.com). I got the "large" fire ring that states it fits classic 18' grills. It's 3" tall. It will arrive here this Thursday and I hope it finishes my Cypress overhaul.

All of the other posted info here is still golden in 2021.

Huge thanks to the author of this thread. Could never have gotten this far without your suggestions.
