Here's an awesome recipe and technique for some sweet southern hushpuppies to serve alongside your next barbecue meal!


⅓ cup minced onion, dried or fresh

Jalapeno pepper, cored, seeded, and minced on a microplane grater (optional)

1 cup ap flour

1 cup yellow cornmeal

¼ cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 large egg

½ cup milk

2 T Lyle’s Golden Syrup or Honey

Oil for frying


Preheat your cooking oil to 350-375°F. Combine the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet in another and whisk to combine. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and whisk to combine. Form into balls and deep fry for 3 to 4 minutes, turning as they cook. Drain on a paper towel, let cool a bit and serve!
