jfredrickson
Hi All, New to the forum, and new to cooking with a Kamado. Years ago my father found an old Imperial (#5 i think, about 18" grill) left in the garage of a condo they bought. I recently took it off his hands because he never used it. Turns out the bottom half of the firebox is just...gone. Looking to restore it and was wondering if the Kamado Joe Classic 18 firebox would work (link below). Trying to put as little into to get it functional to see if it's something I would enjoy using for smoking. Outer shell looks good. Hinges could use some work but are holding together. Fire rings are cracked but whole. Still have original coal grate. All in all the internals are in rough shape but usable minus the firebox. https://www.atbbq.com/accessories/grill-parts/charcoal-grill-parts/kamado-joe-ceramic-firebox-classic-joe-18-inch-grill.html
keeperovdeflame
Welcome Jfredrickson, Lots of folks finding Imperials lately. I have seen a couple right out of the box and completely used and new but old. The only place I know that may have parts is this web site. The owner has been involved in the kamado import business for a long time and owns some type of interest in a Japanese kamado mfg. http://kamadobbq.com

I have read many times people pointing to his site. He does have a replacement firebox but after shipping it runs over $210. I found a KJ Classic for about 120 shipped. Thats a big price difference. I'm not looking to restore this to original condition, just get it functional, and if I start buy parts at those prices I'm going to end up spending as much as I can probably get a modern ceramic cooker that I can take to high heat. Just not worth it. If someone who as a KJ Classic can tell me what the diameter of their firebox is that would be helpful.
jfredrickson
FYI, I ended up going with a "large" BGE replacement and it fit very well. Boater
