I'm purchasing a 18" KJ grill for my son and was comparing Ace Hardware to Lowes.  Ace is 1299.00 and Lowes is $749 for what appears to be the same grill.  The Ace one has the steel mesh gasket and the Lowes one looks to be felt, but other than that they appear the same?

It's not the same grill.  You are looking at a Classic 1 and a Classic 2.  The classic 2 has several other upgrades including the airlift hinge.

Thank you.  In your opinion is the Classic 2 worth the extra $550?  I would assume the ceramic part is the same?

I think he upgrades are worth it, but that's just me.  In terms of cooking, they both are equal.

Thanks John.  I joined forum to ask about KJ. I have a Vision, which I like, but it must have a slight air leak around the ash drawer and I found a post here that addresses this issue, thanks again for a great forum.

I have the KJC 1 from lowes, only real difference is the weight lifting the lid, my opinion is the price difference is not worth it. But thats me.

The other differences are the felt rather than the new gasket material, as OP mentioned, and the Kontrol Tower top vent rather than the daisy wheel.

I have seen the KJCII without the cart for a couple hundred less than the Ace price though, so if you're thinking of a built-in, or even just with a frame or table (see the DIY forum), that's also an option.

I got that same grill from Lowes, and am quite happy with it, but that daisy wheel top isn't one of my favorite parts.  The replacement Kontrol Tower is also available, as is at least one aftermarket similar, for a good bit less than the full price diff here.  And I'll probably be wishing I had the new gasket when it gets time to replace mine for the second or third time...

Why dont you like the daisey wheel?

Just difficult (for me, at least) to keep a consistent opening in it after opening the lid.  The daisy top is pretty loose, so it can move a fair amount.  Also there's no real markings to say what's half-open, for instance.  With the tower, there are markings for quarter-open, for instance, that you can work from.  So it seems like it would be easier to start the next cook a lot closer to where you left the last (similar) one.

Again, I might be making more of this than I should, as I'm still figuring out some aspects of the grill.

I agree it always seems to change after opening it, but only takes a half a second or so to reset..

You might try twisting the top so that KJ logo faces right. That helps to keep the daisy wheel from shifting as much.

If you don't want to deal with the daisy wheel, get the Classic I for $750 then order a Kontrol Tower from Atlanta Grill Company for $60. That is still much less than $1,300 for the Classic II.
